PokerStars has decided to shut down the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure tournament series. This move comes three months before the 2020 PCA would’ve taken place in the Bahamas.

Stars’ decision comes as somewhat of a surprise when considering that the 2019 PCA was largely a success. But their parent company, the Stars Group, felt that it was time to move on from the long-running tournament series.

Players Championship Is the New Focus

The PokerStars Championship will take the reigns for the PCA. The 2019 PSPC, a $25,000 buy-in tournament, drew 1,039 players (some through satellites).

The 2020 PSPC will run while the EPT Barcelona event is happening in August. While the PSPC isn’t exactly the same thing as the PCA in terms of a series, it’s definitely a notable event that should continue running for years into the future.

Looking Back at the PCA

The first PokerStars Caribbean Adventure ran in 2004 at a time when the poker world was booming. The series itself, however, wasn’t quite a smash hit in the beginning.

The 2004 PCA Main Event drew a modest 221 players, with Gus Hansen winning the tourney along with $455,780. By comparison, David “Chino” Rheem earned $1,567,100 for topping an 865-player field last year.

Other notable Main Event champions during the PCA’s run include Gus Hansen (2004), Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (2008), Christian Harder (2017), and Rheem. Marla Lampropulos also gained attention in 2018 for being the lone woman to win this tourney.

The PCA also produced some notable high roller winners, such as Grospellier (2009), Scott Seiver (2013), Steve O’Dwyer (2015), Bryn Kenney (2016), and Jason Koon (2017).

The possibility of the PCA returning at some point in the future shouldn’t be ruled out entirely. But for now, the PCA looks like it’ll be a memory in poker history.
